Reset Reading Challenge

HAPPY MONDAY! I merged two challenges I’ve done from other programs and molded them into a reading challenge for all readers and those who haven’t gotten to set aside the intention to read. In today’s post, I’ve gone through and listed out the two separate challenges and what I combined for a new, slow living-styled challenge. Next weekend comes an opportunity to go offline and enjoy the nature around me.

Tome Reading App, a favorite reading tracker application and website, shut down over the summer. And while I had started sharing reading challenges on my little page, I never got into the habit of sharing them on my website here. So, I wanted to post about this a week in advance, so that you have time to prepare for a weekend of reading and resetting.

I’ve taken two challenges I’ve done in the past and merged them together. One is still active today and I highly recommend their Reddit channel as well as the app that launched earlier this year. The second challenge is one that hasn’t been active in over four years, but it is still a challenge that millions of readers do on their own.

Would you like to read my previous posts and tags on the 24in48 challenge? Check on these posts below, so you can see the previous attempts I’ve made on this challenge over the past 10 years.

24i48 Readathon

Oh, where have y’all gone? The idea with this challenge is to read for 24 hours in a 48-hour period. 24in48 creators were the original ones to capitalize on this challenge and make a whole channel around this community of readers. I’ve linked their Instagram page for reference to the work they put in over the years.

I realized that the idea of cramming 24 hours in 48-hour period wasn’t feasible for me in the process of attempting these challenges over the years. Especially when your boyfriend, who is an avid reader, has one of the days off on the weekend. Not saying he won’t read with me, but we do enjoy doing other non-reading and writing things together. So, I took the idea of seeing how much reading I can do in a weekend and using it to ‘reset’ my reading logs. My focus for reading has its fluctuations just as writing does. I can focus for short periods of time and then go days without reading. I consider audiobooks reading so on days when I don’t want to ‘read’ I will listen to my audiobook and clean the apartment.

Offline Day & Offline Weekend

A subreddit community I’m a part of on Reddit is Offline Day. There’s now an official app via the Apple store that gives you a countdown to when the Offline Weekend comes up as well as other activities you can do to spend your digital life, intentionally and less distracted. I’ve been a part of the Offline Day community for at least five years now and the Offline Weekend Challenges have now become a set routine I strive to participate in. The idea is that on the first full weekend of the month, you go offline and disconnect for 24-48 hours. Starts at sunset on the Friday and then ends Sunday at sundown. Or, if 48 hours is too much, then you could go for one day (Friday to Saturday and/or Saturday to Sunday). the hardest part for me is not checking emails or social media during the challenge. For others, its playing games or even watching hours of streaming.

Reset Reading Challenge, Blended Approach

My intent with this reading challenge is to focus on the INTENT and time I did get to read vs. tracking how many hours I completed. Be present with your reading this weekend. Track your reading stats for the weekend in a notes section on your phone or via handwritten notes. Check-in online to update what you’ve been reading if you find it difficult to go offline for long periods of time.
If you want to take a more slow-living approach, the reset can also apply to your personal life and household management. Maybe going offline and cleaning your house will help you relax and reset for the new month. Maybe the time spent with friends and family playing board games can help you reconnect with those you haven’t seen in person in a while. Or, the weekend can be however you want it to be. As long as your weekend is spent with intentional actions, community, and rest to help you for the month ahead.

This Reset Reading Challenge will be September 4th to September 6th. For those of us living here in the United States, this weekend is also Labor Day Weekend. Most people will have the 7th off thus giving everyone the opportunity to reset for an extra 48 hours.
What are you hoping to read or complete by next weekend? I’d love to discuss books and recipes in the comments below! If you haven’t followed me yet here on my website, you are welcome to join in on my little corner of the internet.

Thanks for reading today’s blog post and I can’t wait to report my resets for this September’s Reading Challenge!
Cheers,
Danielle
